That is not a rule saying every website must respond within 200 ms. Website speed also depends on caching, images, JavaScript, databases, DNS, network conditions, and the visitor's device. It is simply a useful number to keep in mind when checking the server itself.
If your website is already live, look at real measurements before upgrading. That tells you whether the problem is actually the hosting or something on the website.
Don't Forget Backups
A cheap hosting plan can become expensive after a problem if there is no reliable way to restore the site.
Before signing up, find out:
- How often backups run
- How long they are kept
- Where they are stored
- Whether you can restore individual files
- Whether a complete site restore is available
- Whether restoration costs extra
This is particularly important for ecommerce sites. A store can change constantly as customers place orders, accounts are created, and inventory is updated. A backup from several days ago may not be enough.
Managed Hosting or Self-Managed?

Can you add RAM? Increase CPU? Add storage? Move from VPS to VDS? Move to dedicated hosting? The easier that process is, the less likely you are to face another hosting decision six months later.
